1001 Ways To Promote Classical MusicI
am inspired and convinced that each of us (whether we are presenters, artists managers, members from service organizations,
orchestras, performers, educators, or audiences alike.... ) can make a difference in promoting classical music.
Here are some ways that we can promote. I invite you to submit your ideas in the form provided below so that
the list can grow to 1001. I encourage everyone to actually test out the ideas and report back to us your success! Check
back frequently for updates!
Best Wishes Wendy
1) Pay As Your Wish in Concerts
2) Use MySpace to promote concerts and artist
3) Use YouTube to capture concerts, use as promotion materials for artists and presenter series.
4) Podcast concerts, and create talk shows on podcasts
5) Lower Tickets Price
6) For
Presenters, make people feel welcome in presenting concerts by making the concerts less formal.
7) Have concerts in non-traditional hours
8) Collaborate with other institutions such
as museums, cultural institutions, and local communities in concert presentations.
9) Pre-performance talks
10) Internet radios such as Backbone can help artists, managers, and presenters broadcast live concerts, and have continous air play online. See my website homepage for an example.
11) Keep advocating for arts/music in education with our government!
Check Arts Presenters Advocacy Page and also check out American Arts Alliance
12) Music lovers! Keep buying Classical music! Get them at itunes
13) Presenters, have pre and post concert "Meet And Greet" so that preformers and audiences
get a chance to interact.
14) Performers! Be personable and talk to you audience during
concerts
15) Music Lovers! Organize concert outings by using Meetin.org
16) Have concerts in non-tradidtional venues such as The Kitchen, Joe's Pub, or BAM Cafe.
17) Presenters, and Artists! Use Meetup.com to promote your concert! Presenters can also offer discount group rates for organizers to bring
in 30 people or more through Meetup.com.
18) Network with other musicians through sites such as
Classical Lounge, and Friendster.
19) Do become a member of these organizations to stay in touch of what's going on in the
classical music scene: Chamber Music America, Musical America, Arts Presenters, American Orchestra Symphony League, ASCAP, American String Teachers Association. You can find more organizations here: Click here.
20) Know the world we live in and how it impacts the arts. Here are a couple of good
places to start: Arts Journal, the art section of New York Times.
21) Stay invovled with the National Endowment for the Arts.
22) Hey, we all need funding for our concerts, and projects! The Foundation Center is a great resoruce!
23) Music Vista is a good net resource for all of us.
24) "Culturethreads is a shared space for public debate on questions of policy, practice and innovation in the arts and culture". Let's
keep the advocacy conversations going online guys!
25) Besides PBS, which provides classical music TV programs, do you know about Ovation on TV? It says on their website, " downloads coming!Ovation- The Arts Network
is television's only channel devoted exclusively to the arts." Let your friends know about it! It's on cable!
High Definition TV broadcasts many live opera and classical concerts also. Invite your friends over
to watch a show together.
26) Promote concerts and organize guests lists
by using online tools such as Event Brite (you can accept direct payment online), and Evite.
27) A regular E-Newsletter from organizations, presenters and artists can keep audiences informed.
Here are a couple of good newsletter makers: Vertical Response and Constant Contact. Do be careful of the frequency of the newsletter though. You don't want to spam your potential audiences.
28) We all need flyers, postcards to promote our concerts. Vistaprint offers great printing quality with a darn good price. You can also get almost free business cards.
29)
This maybe obvious, but don't forget to write a nice press release to your local papers, magazines, and
radio stations before your concert. Here's a link to tips on writing a good
press release: Click here
30) Check out NewMusicBox to find out the vibe in the music scene.31)Here's a great idea for organizations to truly engage their community, and also to fundraise
- See the Music, a juried exhibit of approximately 40 artists
commissioned by the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. Here' the winner of the exhibit. 32)Thematic
programming is a great way to attract audiences. Classical Jam has a program called "From The Street To the Concert Hall", where we trace "street elements" of classical masterworks. Rossini's music in his days was considered popular
and was sung on the street, and Bartok's Romanian Dances was inspired by the dances that were danced on the street.... More Coming!!
